Open the "Window" menu and choose "Color" to reveal the Color panel. Activate the Pen tool from the Adobe Illustrator toolbox. The Template setting automatically locks any layer to which you apply it so you can't accidentally move the object you're redrawing.Ĭlick on the "Create New Layer" button at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a new layer above your templated bitmap. I`n the Layer Options dialog box, activate the "Template" check box to reduce the opacity of your bitmap so you can draw over it. Select the "Window" menu and choose "Layers" to reveal the Layers panel.Ĭlick the "Flyout" menu at the upper-right corner of the Layers panel and choose "Options for ," where "Layer name" represents the name of the layer on which you located your bitmap. Open, place or paste your bitmapped artwork into Adobe Illustrator. Make adjustments to your settings if you're not satisfied, or click on the "Trace" button to complete the process. Vector determines how Illustrator shows your tracing output.Īctivate the "Preview" check box to examine your tracing results before you commit to completing the tracing operation. Raster determines how and whether Illustrator displays the bitmap you're tracing. Select settings from the "View" section of the Tracing Options dialog box. Ignore White omits white areas from the tracing, making it easy to drop out the white background behind a scan or photo of an object. Corner Angle defines the break point between corner points and smooth points, which equals the difference between sharply angled and smoothly curved transitions in a line. Minimum Area regulates the smallest detail that Live Trace will process. Path Fitting defines how closely the tracing follows details in the original image. Their accompanying Max Stroke Weight and Min Stroke Length settings define the values above which strokes become filled areas and below which details in the image won't become strokes. The Fills and Strokes check boxes govern whether black and white trace results include either or both of those options. Set options for the Trace Settings section of the Tracing Options dialog box. Resample sets a resolution between 1 and 600 pixels per inch for a resampling process applied to your bitmap before it's traced, which can speed tracing results at the expense of fidelity. This setting helps the program cope with large, noisy or degraded images. Blur defines a gaussian blur radius between zero and 20 pixels that Illustrator applies to your image before it traces it. The Output to Swatches check box tells Illustrator to add to your Swatches panel the colors it uses in its traced output. Max Colors defines a number between two and 256 and represents the maximum number of colors or grayscale shades in the output result. Unless you open one of Illustrator's swatch libraries before you start the Live Trace process, Automatic represents your only Palette choice, which means that Illustrator defines the colors in its traced output. Palette defines a color system for converting an image to color or grayscale. The Threshold option only becomes active if you set Mode to black and white. "Threshold" defines the point between zero and 255, above which luminosity, or brightness, values convert to white, and below which they convert to black. "Mode" selects among color, grayscale, and black and white. If one of the presets comes close to your output objectives, you can use it as a starting point and adjust its parameters in the rest of the Tracing Options settings. You can select from 14 settings that ship with the software or choose a preset you've defined yourself. Choose a preset from the drop-down menu at the top left of the Tracing Options dialog box.
